On July 14, 2026, Microsoft SQL Server 2016 reaches the end of extended support from Microsoft. After this date, the platform will no longer receive security updates, bug fixes, or technical support unless organisations purchase costly extended security update programmes.

When SQL Server 2016 launched, it represented a major step forward for the Microsoft data platform. Some of the most notable features introduced included:

  1. Always Encrypted – protecting sensitive data both at rest and in use.
  2. Query Store – providing better visibility into query performance and regression tracking.
  3. Temporal Tables – enabling built-in historical data tracking.
  4. JSON Support – allowing native storage and querying of JSON data.
  5. Live Query Statistics – enabling real-time monitoring of query execution and troubleshooting.

At the time, these capabilities helped many organisations modernise their data estates and improve both performance and security.

However, once a SQL Server version reaches end of life, continuing to run it introduces increasing operational and compliance risks. Unsupported systems become more vulnerable to security threats, may fail internal or external compliance requirements, and can create barriers to adopting newer technologies and integrations.

For organisations still running SQL Server 2016, now is the time to assess upgrade and migration options. Moving to newer platforms such as Microsoft SQL Server 2022 or cloud-based services in Microsoft Azure can provide improved security, performance, availability, and long-term support while helping ensure systems remain safe, compliant, and future-ready.

At The Masterminds Group, we help organisations evaluate their current data estate, identify risks and opportunities, and define practical modernisation strategies that align with business goals. Whether the right path is an in-place upgrade, cloud migration, platform consolidation, or a broader data transformation initiative, our teams across data and DevOps can help businesses plan and execute the journey with confidence.
